IF God is Sovereign

If God is sovereign (He is) why do Christians use the term Free to describe human will ie. free will.

God is Sovereign- that means he is above all, supreme in rank, rules, is all powerful, has all authority, is not disputable, not deniable, not able to be called into question, self governing.

God is the Almighty (unlimited power). He possess all the power and knowledge of heaven, earth and the universe so that he does not need help nor counsel from anything.  Nothing can defeat nor defend against His counsel, he works all things according to the counsel of His will, and no one can resist his will or opposes his plan. read Eph 1:11, Rom 9:19

Eph 1:11 " also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His (God’s) purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,"

Rom 9:19 "You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?" 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?"

God's sovereignty is absolute- that means he is completely free from imperfection (error), completely free from restrictions (limitations), and completely independent ( needs support nor cooperation from anything).

Questions
1. Is everything subject to God's rule, control, authority, purpose, and plan? Even the thoughts and actions of man!

2. Who is the creator of all things? What or Who is the source of all things? How do all things exist and hold together? Why were they created? (past, present and future)?

Col  1: 16 "For it was in Him (God- Christ ) that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [by His service, ] and in and for Him."
17 And He Himself existed before all things, and in Him all things consist (cohere, are held together).

Heb 1: 3 And He (Jesus the Son, the Christ) is the radiance of His (God the Father) glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His (Christ) power When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Rom 11: 36 For from Him (God- Christ) and through Him and to Him are all things To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

(Amplified Bible version)
Rom 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. [For all things originate with Him and come from Him; all things live through Him, and all things center in and tend to consummate and to end in Him.] To Him be glory forever! Amen (so be it).
God says He is the Alpha and the Omega the Beginning and the End everything begins and end in Him. Rev 21:6

Question:
In light of these scriptures, Do all things mean all things or can we find something to exclude from what God has created. Is there any thing that God has created that He is not in control of? Are there things that exist that God does not uphold or sustain by His power.

So what about the action of man! Are the thoughts, actions, will, and heart off limits to the Creator God- No

Psa 33  14 "From His dwelling place He looks [intently] upon all the inhabitants of the earth"
15 "He (God) Who fashions the hearts of them all, Who considers (knows, understands) all their doings."
God is the one who fashions and creates the heart of man. Read the scripture references below about what comes out of the heart and what we are commanded to do with our hearts and minds.

"God controls the heart of man"
Pro 21:1, 2
"The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD, He turns it wherever He wishes (wills)"

Matt 15:18-19
18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. 19 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders

Mat 22:37 And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE
THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'

So, God has formed the heart of man, He knows, considers, and understands all that we do because He made it,and He controls the heart of man. Does He control all hearts or just the hearts of kings only? No

Does God control the mind, thoughts, action, and will of man? If God controls the hearts of man, Is man ever free from the control of his Creator? Where is human free wil? Where is human free will? relative to His Creator. I'm not addressing the will of man relative to other created beings exa. human to human. I will address in a future post.

Actions that proceed from the heart, (reference scriptures)- Matt13:15, Matt 15:8, Matt 22:37, Matt 15:18,19, Luke 6:45, Jn 7:38, Rom 6:17

Believers and unbelievers  live and move only because of God

Acts 17:28
28For in Him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your [own] poets have said, For we are also His offspring. (Paul talking to the men of Athens who were not believers.)
Similar to what Daniel said to the King Belshazzar in the latter part of

Dan 5:23
23but you have exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your nobles, your wives and your concubines have been drinking wine from them; and you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood and stone, which do not see, hear or understand But the God in whose hand are your life-breath and all your ways, you have not glorified.

God is in control of every thought, breath, heart beat, swallow, smell, touch, taste, blink, and wink, EVERY MOVEMENT! EVERYTHING! " In him we live move and have our being can it get any clearer to us. What a awesome God! Have you ever tried to control you heart beat? Have you ever tried stop hearing if (if your not deaf) stop seeing (if you can see.)
These things we take for lightly, While we will say well that's obvious that God controls those things. But what about the not so obvious we assume that God must have left the mind, will and emotion up to the man to control-(free from the control of its Creator) no, not so according to the Word God. We make decsions but they are never independent of the control of our Creator.

More scriptures to consider!

Jer 10:23
O LORD, I know the way of man [is] not in himself; [It is] not in man who walks to direct his own steps.
  (Amp ver)
O Lord [pleads Jeremiah in the name of the people], I know that [the determination of] the way of a man is not in himself; it is not in man [even in a strong man or in a man at his best] to direct his [own] steps.

Pro 20:24
Man's steps are ordered by the Lord. How then can a man understand his way?

Pro 16:9
The mind of man plans his way,
But the LORD directs his steps.
Job 23:13, 14
But He(God)is unique and who can turn Him?
And what His soul desires, that He does
For He performs what is appointed for me (Job),

and many such decrees are with Him. Does this only apply to Job?

John 15:5
(Jesus says this of believers)
I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.

Isa 46:10
The LORD  says I
Declare the end and the result from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure and purpose, - ref Job 42:1,2,

Isa 14:27 "For the LORD of hosts has planned, and who can frustrate it? And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back?"

These scripture affirms that God plans the end result (the out come of a thing) from the beginning. God does not passively look into the future and allow or permit things to happen that fit his time schedule or plan, or waits to see how man handles a situation. He's in charge, Our God is Sovereign he Reigns, He governers all things by his Providence. Praise Him and Thank Him for it!

Question
What are these scripture revealing about God in relation to man?
How could we say, according to the scriptures, that the Human Will is free from his creator at anytime?

• Definition of Will- the faculty of man that he uses to decide, determine, or chose a certain thing over another and to perform an action.
Definition of Free- exempt from external authority, internal influence, any interference, any restrictions. Completely independent, clear of all obstructions or obstacles

So, does this describe the Human Will relative to his Creator? again Is the Human Will, completely free from external authority, completely free from restrictions (limitations) and completely independent(needs no support nor cooperation from anything) this term should only be reserved for our Creator alone just as , Sovereign, All Powerful, All Knowing, and  Eternal (without beginning or end) all of these attributes are set aside for God alone and no one has a right to them, neither should created beings have the right to the term Free Will in its true definition according to how most Christians seem to use the term.

How should we describe the human will or the mind, will, and emotions. In short, It is the faculties that God has given man that man will use to make choices, carry out actions, feel ect. and Most importantly experience HIM!

So why do Christians incorrectly use the term Free will to describe the human will, most of the time it is to try and understand or explain why evil exist or why bad things happen, that I will discuss in another Post also.

Christians nor unbelievers are ever free from the control of his Creator. God has not left anything up for grabs not our minds, hearts, nor our body parts.

We should profess this so that God is magnified in and over ALL THINGS! To HIM be the Glory and Dominion forever Amen.(so be it)

  2. Thanks for today's post man. I think it is imperative to have this type of perspective solidified in the mind as these foundational thoughts color how I relate to the creator.

I believe it’s in "James" where it says in so many words, that those who are not doing the will or led by God are led by, controlled by evil.

I will look into this further, later today. But it seems that when speaking of free will, it should be understood within the confines of two options – all of God's way or all of Satan's way. Essentially with no room for a middle ground of being just warm with God. The option and reality is hot or cold.

  3. Paul puts it best in Romans during his discussion of being a slave. He spoke in terms of being a slave. A slave being purchase and there being a transfer of ownership when I chose to beleive in Christ.

So by defualt I was slave to evil (my own natural way of thinking and doing), then by deciding to relinquish atheism, and claim that I was purchase through Jesus Christ payment, I became slave to a new owner - to the only form of freedom available.

  5. Hey TLan, thanks for your comments.
According to the scriptures you are exactly right.

Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness?

Rom 6:17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,

Rom 6:18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.

So, Mankind is either enslaved to sin or a slave to righteousness

    Thanks again for your insight!
